There’s still time for someone to intervene or change their minds, but it seems like a trade that will send Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers and Andrew Wiggins to the Minnesota Timberwolves among other moving parts is going to happen, and the only thing preventing it from being announced is a certain league rule.
Wiggins signed his contract last month, and there has to be a “grace” period of 30 days before he can be traded. So it seems that the Cavaliers and Timberwolves have gotten all the details worked out. The Philadelphia 76ers are also in it, probably, with at least one player that will be moving and more than one that they’ll be receiving. It’s just a matter of waiting until August 23 so it can become official.
Not everyone agrees, but it’s becoming a more and more popular opinion. Brian Windhorst spoke to ESPN New York 98.7 FM and made it seem like there’s nothing really standing in the way of this deal from happening unless some team – the Golden State Warriors probably, comes in with a last minute deal that’s better than what they’ve been offering so far. However, it seems like their decision about involving Klay Thopmson, and hence keeping this deal alive, has been made a long time ago.
The deal is done but not done. The teams have agreed but they can’t say they’ve agreed and they can’t agree because we’re in this weird moratorium period. Because you can’t trade Andrew Wiggins until the 23rd of this month. Before now and then could something happen? Could some team come in with a trade that maybe Minnesota see? Yes, it could happen, so therefore it is not done. But essentially, before the papers have been signed there is a handshake agreement that would send Kevin Love to the Cavs, Andrew Wiggins to the Timberwolves, and I believe Thaddeus Young will end up in Minnesota either as part of the deal or a separate deal.
It’s not quite clear how much the Cavaliers are going to give up. For now it’s going to be Wiggins and Anthony Bennett at least, but Dion Waiters and maybe more will also be part of this trade. The Philadelphia 76ers are likely to give up on Thaddeus Young, knowing he can become a free agent in 2015. They’ll probably look for yet another draft pick, and maybe will even get one of the contracts the Timberwolves are trying to dump: J.J. Barea, Kevin Martin (more likely going to Cleveland if at all) and Alexey Shved.
Some teams value potential, others value the now. The Timberwolves would like to be about winning now and setting up a foundation for days to come, but Kevin Love wants out, and they’re afraid they’ll be left with nothing but cap space for one of the best players in the NBA. The Cavs want to win now, maybe a bit too much, pressured by LeBron James. The Philadelphia 76ers are thinking too much about the future, but at some point all those trades and prospects they’ve been working on will have to materialize in one way or another.
