Not too many goals, but plenty of interesting results, led by Swansea upsetting Manchester United at the Old Trafford to open the Premier League season, while Arsenal enjoyed a 90th minute goal from Aaron Ramsey to come away with a opening weekend win. The same scenario was at place for their bitter rivals Tottenham, also winning in injury time with Eric Dier being the hero.
Burnley 1 Chelsea 3: Things started out quite interesting as Scott Arfield put Burnley in the lead after 14 minutes, but it wasn’t much of a fair fight afterwards. Diego Costa scored on his Premier League debut, adding the diving and yellow card he’s famous for. Cesc Fabregas set up the next two goals, first with a genius pass to Andre Schurrle and finished with a corner kick, converted by Branislav Ivanovic.
Newcastle 0 Manchester City 2: A dominant performance from the champions, showing their superiority from the first to the 90th minute and in injury time. The first goal came from David Silva, set up by Edin Dzeko. Sergio Aguero got his scoring campaign started with a late goal to put them on top of the Premier League for now.
Liverpool 2 Southampton 1: Not the most convincing of starts for last year’s runner up, but enough for an opening win. Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the first half, but a solid 30 minutes from Ronald Koemna’s underdogs resulted in a pretty finish from Nathaniel Clyne. Daniel Sturridge, weak on his without-Suarez performance, scored the winner for Liverpool with 11 minutes left.
Manchester United 1 Swansea 2: A change of managers hasn’t helped Manchester United one match into the new season, losing a home opener for the first time in over 40 years. Ki Sung-Yueng opened the scoring for the visitors in the first half with a smart shot from outside the box, and Van Gaal was forced to change tactics which didn’t make much of a difference. Wayne Rooney equalized early in the first half but returnee Gylfi Sigurdsson scored the winner with 20 minutes to go after another defensive lapse in the United box.
Leicester 2 Everton 2: A happy return to the Premier League for Leicester City, making their first appearance since 2004. Twice they managed to come back from behind, as brilliant goals from Aiden McGeady and Steven Naismith were countered by Jose Ulloa and a late goal from Chris Woods after a scramble in the Everton box, not dominating as some would expect them to.
QPR 0 Hull City 1: Another returning team to the Premier League but a very different result. QPR got plenty of chances from inside the box, most of them shots that were blocked, but couldn’t find a way past Allen McGregor. James Chester scored the only goal of the match with a 52nd minute header off a Stephen Quinn corner.
Stoke 0 Aston Villa 1: It’s been quite some time, since January 1, that Aston Villa have been playing without an away win. One strike from Andreas Weimann in the 50th minute that was knocked off of Asmir Begovic was enough for them to start another season with a surprise away win, as both teams struggled creating chances in a tight and crowded match.
West Brom 2 Sunderland 2: Probably the most enjoyable match of the day, as Sunderland took a shocking lead with a goal from Lee Cattermole. Before the end of the first half, Berahino equalized from the penalty spot after a controversial penalty call. Berahino gave West Brom the lead in the 74th minute but a Seb Larsson goal with four minutes left gave us a deserved draw to open the season.
West Ham 0 Tottenham 1: Highway robbery as Tottenham come away with a 92nd minute winner from Eric Dier, pulling off a stunner considering how the match went. Kyle Naughton was sent off in the first half, but West Ham missed their penalty kick opportunity as Mark Noble let out a terrible shot. James Collins evened things on the pitch by being sent off with a second yellow card in the second half.
Arsenal 2 Crystal Palace 1: Not the impressive start many were looked forward to but after going down early from a Brede Hangeland header in the 35th minute. Laurent Koscielny equalized just before half time off an Alexis Sanchez assist and Aaron Ramsey, the most important player on this team, scored the winner in injury time 45 minutes later.
