Following Chelsea winning and Arsenal drawing on the first day of the gameweek, Tottenham followed that up with a crushing win over QPR to take them to the top of the table thanks to goal difference, joining Chelsea and Swansea as the only teams with six points out of the first two matches so far.
Manchester City 3 Liverpool 1: An efficient performance from the champions, scoring the first three goals through awful defensive mistakes from Liverpool. Stevan Jovetic (twice) and Sergio Aguero in another super sub cameo gave them the lead. Rickie Lamebrt (or a Zabaleta own goal) made things interesting for a minute or two.
Sunderland 1 Manchester United 1: Another disappointing performance from Manchester United, but they do get their first point of the season, while Sunderland draw for a second straight week. Juan Mata opened the scoring for the struggling visitors, Jack Rodwell had himself a big moment in his comeback season, equalizing on the half hour mark to set the score.
Tottenham 4 QPR 0: A fantastic performance from Tottenham against the shambles of a defense QPR tried to present at White Hart Lane, sending Spurs to the top of the Premier League. Nacer Chadli scored twice, Eric Dier stunned everyone again with his second goal of the season and Emmanuel Adebayor scored the only goal of the second half while Harry Redknapp was left slumping and sulking in the dug out all match long.
Hull 1 Stoke 1: Stoke City manage to avoid a second consecutive loss to open the season thanks to a late goal from Ryan Shawcross. Hull took the lead just before half time through Nikica Jelavic, and had to play with 10 men since the 14th minute after the sending off of James Chester.
Aston Villa 0 Newcastle 0: A pacey affair at Villa park that produced goalkeeping performances, nothing more. Brad Guzan, for the second consecutive week, looked sharp between the posts while Newcastle found themselves slightly unlucky not to score in a match they were better in, especially in the second half. Mike Williamson was sent off in the final minutes with two quick yellow cards.
Chelsea 2 Leicester 0: This wasn’t the impressive performance we saw from them in the opening weekend, and yet Chelsea continue to look decisive, consistent and dangerous enough to put their talented players in excellent situations that they’ll eventually convert. Leicester weren’t bad, but their best player was Kasper Schmeichel, their goalkeeper. Diego Costa scored his second goal, Eden Hazard scored his first shortly after, both coming in the final 30 minutes of the match.
Crystal Palace 1 West Ham 3: A minor London derby but eventful nonetheless. Mauro Zarate, who might become a big star for West Ham under the right circumstances, scored the first goal in the 34th minute, and three minutes later Stewart Downing added another goal from outside the box, not too far away from where the first one was struck. Marouane Chamakh brought Palace back into the match early in the second half, but West Ham were dominant for most of the match and got a third goal through Carlton Cole in the 62nd minute.
Southampton 0 West Brom 0: A dull affair at St. Mary’s with Southampton being the better side, but not really creating long minutes of pressure on the visitors, as both teams picked up their first points in the match.
Swansea 1 Burnley 0: Believe it or not, but Swansea have six points. Nathan Dyer scored the only goal (23rd minute) in a match that turned out to be a lot more complicated than some expected because of how bad Burnley looked in the first match. It didn’t matter a lot as they are at the bottom of the table, along with Crystal Palace, with 0 points after their first two matches.
Everton 2 Arsenal 2: An excellent match at Goodison Park, as Arsenal climbed back out of a two-goal hole after an awful first half. Seamus Coleman and Steven Naismith scored in the opening half, but some poor defending and poor substitutions from Roberto Martinez led to equalizers from Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.
