Serie A – Week 1 Results & Table

Serie A Week 1

All three main title contenders – Juventus (at Chievo), Roma (hosting Fiorentina) and Napoli (at Genoa) picked up opening day wins to start off their Series A campaign, but AC Milan themselves are also off to a good start with an impressive win and performance against Lazio.

Chievo 0  Juventus 1The champions didn’t impress as they begin a new era with a new manager, needing an own goal from Cristiano Biraghi in the 7th minute to pick up three points.

Roma 2  Fiorentina 0Two or the more attractive playing teams in Italian football, but this match was all about the hosts, hoping to finish one place higher than the one from last season, getting goals from Gervinho and Radja Nainggolan.

Milan 3  Lazio 1Not a lot of people believe in this cheaply built Milan side, but it’s off to a great start under Inzaghi, taking a three goal lead through Keisuke Honda, Sulley Muntari and Jeremy Menez from the penalty spot. Alex scoring an own goal didn’t hamper the celebrations.

Atalanta 0  Verona 0: A boring, dull draw, with very few dangerous chances or real moments of excitement.

Cesena 1  Parma 0A rough week and season-start for Parma who are also out of the European competitions due to financial irregularities. Cesena worked hard for their win, getting a goal from Alejandro Rodriguez and then relying on saves from Nicola Leali to pick up their first ever opening day win in the Serie A.

Genoa 1  Napoli 2The best match of the weekend in Italy, one which Napoli were the better side in, taking the lead through Jose Maria Callejon before Mauricio Pinilla equalized in the 40th minute. Jonathan de Guzman, making his debut for Napoli, scored the winner five minutes into injury time.

Palermo 1  Sampdoria 1Not a lot of chances on both sides, and yet it’s still hard to believe Palermo didn’t win a match they led in from the 7th minute and had a one player advantage from the 40th minute after Vasco Regini was sent off. Daniele Gastaldello equalized for Sampdoria in injury time.

Sassuolo 1  Cagliari 1: Two goals right before half time – Simone Zaza opened for the home side and two minutes later it was Marco Sau who equalized.

Torino 0  Inter 0: The most memorable thing from this match? Nemanja Vidic getting sent off on his Inter debut.

Udinese 2  Empoli 0The scoring machine called Antonio Di Natale didn’t retire and Udinese are quite happy for it, getting two goals from the veteran striker to have themselves a happy start to the season.
