NFL Rumors – Miami Dolphins Interested in Signing LaMichael James

LaMichael James

With one running back out for a month and another carrying a minor injury, the Miami Dolphins are looking to make additions signings at the positions, which means LaMichael James, recently released by the San Francisco 49ers at his behest, might end up playing for them very soon.

Knowshon Moreno had a great debut for the Dolphins in week 1, beating the New England Patriots and running for 134 yards. In week 2, he managed to run with the ball just once before hurting his elbow, which turned out to be an injury that will keep him out for a month.

Lamar Miller, the team’s number two running back, is questionable for the next game against the Kansas City Chiefs having hurt his ankle. He has run for 105 yards on 22 carries while doing a pretty good job as a receiver as well, but the Dolphins have already signed Daniel Thomas to try and fill in the hole left by Moreno, and might be looking to make more signings so they don’t find themselves in a predicament before their next game.

James is in his third season as an NFL player. He was with the San Francisco 49ers since 2012, but was released from the team after the first game, getting just two touches in the win over the Dallas Cowboys. With Carlos Hyde taking over the second running back position James felt it’s time for him to move on if he wants some playing time, with his request being granted by the 49ers.

James hasn’t been used much since being drafted. Some return duties (49 punt & kick returns during his first two seasons) and from time to time was used in the backfield, but found it quite a rare occurrence to actually being on the field. In two seasons with the 49ers, he had a total of 39 carries and five receptions. He did contribute in a couple of playoff games, but that never helped him solidify his place as a more useful backup to Frank Gore.

The Dolphins crashed against the Buffalo Bills, with a lot of it coming from the running game being able to produce like it did against the Patriots. There’s really not a lot about James that says he’s the man to pick up the slack for either Moreno or Miller, but he’s probably better than the re-signed Daniel Thomas, and can provide a different running style, not to mention the depth the Dolphins so desperately need.
