The St. Louis Rams have one of the worse ground games in the NFL, but giving Tre Mason more of the ball and making him a more prominent feature at running back could help them improve that aspect of their game.

The Rams are ranked 22nd in the NFL with 100.9 rushing yards per game. They’re led by Zac Stacy with 259 yards so far on 67 carries, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. As a team, the Rams have only four touchdowns through a rushing play, and only one player has broken out on runs for over 20 yards – Mason, the rookie out of Auburn, with three runs of 20 yards or more so far this season.

Mason is averaging 4.5 yards per carry, going for 222 yards on 49 carries so far this season. His involvement hasn’t been consistent so far this season, as well as his production, going for 65 yards on 19 carries in the win over the 49ers. But it seems Jeff Fisher is planning on using him a lot more from now on, because the Rams rely heavily on their ability to move the ball on the ground.

The Rams also have Benjamin Cunningham as an outlet on the ground, with quarterback Austin Davis being a non factor with just 36 yards on 13 carries. But for an offense that has been so difficult to get going this season, usually winning on defensive superiority and trick plays on special teams, getting a player to give them some sort of a jolt is something of a must if Fisher feels there’s still something to be won and had in a division that’s turning out to be very different than expectations.

Mason’s best game this season came in the win over the Seahawks, running for 85 yards on 18 carries. He ran for over 1800 yards last season for Auburn, leading the Tigers to an SEC title and playing in the national championship game, narrowly losing to Florida State.
