Even when you’re the best in the NBA it’s never too late to try and sign players. The Golden State Warriors are joining the long list of teams trying to sign Ray Allen out of free agency and semi-retirement, and will have to battle for his services along with the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Washington Wizards and the Los Angeles Clippers.

Bob Myers, the general manager of the Warriors, has told the media that the team has been trying to work something out with Allen’s representation, but is also where it’s going to be difficult to find minutes for the future hall of famer.

The Warriors back court is currently packed with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Shaun Livingston, Andre Iguodala (although he plays mostly at small forward) and Leandro Barbosa. Allen’s specialty, outside shooting, isn’t something that is such a big problem or necessity for the Warriors.

Another team trying to sign Allen, the Cleveland Cavaliers, aren’t exactly struggling when it comes to 3-point shooting. The connection is obvious, coming from the presence of LeBron James. But the Cavs’ most pressing issue most of the time is defense, not shooting. In any case, they are slightly short at guards on the bench, which makes Allen more likely to join them.

In any case, Allen isn’t going to make up his mind until the beginning of 2015. He’s waiting to see where the best situation for him is: Individually, in terms of getting minutes (averaged 26.5 minutes a night last season for the Heat, not exactly an end-of-the-bench scrub) and obviously, the chance of playing for the NBA championship at the end of the season.

Allen is a two time NBA champion (2008 with the Celtics and 2013 with the Heat). He has also played in the finals twice, losing: 2010 with the Celtics against the Lakers and 2014 with the Heat against the Spurs.
