In the background? The Miami Heat losing at home 109-102 to the Milwaukee Bucks. Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao both being in attendance stole the show, not to mention the two actually speaking to each other face to face, probably for the first time ever.
With Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz standing next to the two boxers, Mayweather and Pacquiao had a brief exchange of words and what seemed to be like an awkward hug of sorts. It’s quite clear that the two of them don’t really care for each other, but this wasn’t going to be some embarrassing moment of two potential rivals in the ring (so far, it’s been close to a decade of potential when it comes to this fight) actually coming close to blows outside the ring.
Are we any closer to the fight happening? As in the past, the two talking to each other isn’t going to settle anything. In the past, Mayweather spoke to Pacquiao on the phone and offered him $40 million to take the fight. Pacquiao, rightly so, refused. Now? Knocz refused to say what actually was said between the two. It’s still something that goes on above their heads. They might give guidelines and final approval, but other people are handling the negotiations.
So while both of them appeared on screen with some writing from the video operator suggesting that 2015 might be the year it finally happens the Heat lost at home again, this time to possibly the most surprising team in this NBA season, the Milwaukee Bucks. The Hawks and the Warriors are performing above expectations, and so are a couple of other teams, but the Bucks with a new head coach and a very young squad, a year after tanking like their lives depended on it, and they’re doing well beyond anything anyone thought they’d do.
But the Bucks won’t win a championship this year or contend for one. The same goes for the Miami Heat. Pacquiao and Mayweather? They might not fight either after all of the foreplay and hype, but there’s a better prospect of the two of them finally getting in the ring to settle once and for all a debate that’s been going on for seven or eight years, while setting new records to every possible viewership, revenue and attendance fees in the sport of boxing.
Maybe, just maybe, this is some smart promoting by Bob Arum and Al Haymon, making it seem like a coincidence that the two fighters, never showing up in the same place at the same time, all of a sudden happen to be both attending the same NBA game while talks of their upcoming fight continue to keep boxing headline makers busy.
