Mayweather vs Pacquiao

Maybe pigs are flying. Or maybe hell has frozen over. The impossible has happened. The fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is on. Official. It’s actually going to happen. Very few actually believed there was any hope left.

But with so much money left on the table and both their careers not having too many years left, Mayweather caved. It might be a matter of which storyline you want to believe, but it’s been more of a Mayweather avoiding Pacquiao thing than anything else. All the conditions and stipulations put on and assembled over the years? That’s Mayweather’s work in order to stop the fight from happening. But no more.

Las Vegas is going wild. No more rooms in the hotel, no more seats in the boxing venue. The two will go at it on May 2, with Mayweather getting the bigger share in their 60-40 split in a fight that is supposed to generate over $400 million and shatter almost every viewing and financial record regarding Pay Per View boxing, as the fight is expected to cost $89.95 and $10 more for the HD experience. There’s also a title or two on the line, but the belts, as always in this sport, are far less important.

Part of the contract that took so long to negotiate was Floyd Mayweather getting the privilege of announcing the fight. The news leaking from the Bob Arum and Top Rank camp about an agreement almost being made didn’t really help the already tense relationship, but eventually, everybody, especially Mayweather, got what they were wishing for. Well, Mayweather would have lived fine without actually having to face Pacquiao in the ring, but six years is a long enough time for avoiding your number one opponent.
