NFL Rumors – New England Patriots Releasing Darrelle Revis to Sign Him Again

Darrelle Revis

The fact that the New England Patriots released Darrelle Revis into free agency doesn’t mean they don’t want him to play for them next season. On the contrary, there’s a very strong likelihood that they’re the only team he wants to play for.

Obviously, the New York Jets, where Revis played from 2007 to 2012, are in the running to sign him, planning to make a very big offer for him. However, Revis has stated he’s more than interested to carry on playing for Bill Belichick and the Patriots, playing a very big part in their Super Bowl success last season.

So why did the Patriots release Revis? His contract meant taking a $25 million cap hit in 2015 which they refused to pick up. It’s wise to remember that when Revis signed with the Patriots he was coming off a so-so season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

That allowed the Patriots to sign him on a $32 million deal, which meant playing for $12 million in 2014. The Patriots got an excellent cornerback for below market value price, while Revis established himself once again as one of the best defensive backs in the league if not the best of them, making his sixth Pro Bowl selection and his fourth first team All-Pro.

The Jets might be able to offer him Revis more money, but when the Patriots are competitive in terms of contracts, it’s hard saying no to them. They’re a team that has the tools to make another run at the Super Bowl with the history to prove it.

The Jets? While things are changing, possibly for the better, but there are too many question marks about the franchise and its direction. Unless the money is really that much better, it’s hard to find a reason for Revis to sign with them.
