NFL Rumors – Green Bay Packers Interested in Signing Wes Welker

Wes Welker

Moving from team to team in an effort to win a Super Bowl, Wes Welker might be joining the Green Bay Packers this offseason, if they’ll make an exception and actually sign a free agent who is quite near to the end of his career.

According to the reports, the Packers are interested in a free agent receiver that’s not going to cost a lot of money. Welker, with a history of concussions (called the anti-Chris Borland by some) and coming off his worst season statistically (14 games, 49 receptions, 494 yards), is not going to cost a lot of money. Not at the age of 34 and without a lot of demand for his services any more.

The Packers aren’t exactly needy in terms of receivers. Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and others. They’re also not known for making a splash. They’ve always been a team that builds through the drafts and hangs on to the players they deem worthy of keeping. Welker is just a filler, a reserve, but still potentially a meaningful one.

And it makes sense for Welker considering his history. He has played under great quarterbacks, hall of fame quarterbacks. He played with Tom Brady from 2007 to 2012, making the Pro Bowl five times and named to the first team All-Pro twice. Then came two seasons with Peyton Manning, including one Super Bowl appearance, but clearly a decline in his numbers. Age, and playing next to a lot of other receivers.

Does this happen? We’ve heard of a number of teams showing interest in Welker, but nothing specific. Welker is probably not going to try and find a spot on a team without Super Bowl aspirations. He doesn’t mind playing in cold weather. He still has something to give in the right role. The Packers might not needs him that badly, but they might sign him if the price is right.
