There seems to be a consensus that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are picking Jameis Winston with the number one overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft. What will the Tennessee Titans do? Well, they have no problem with taking another quarterback, Marcus Mariota, at number two overall.
Most mock drafts suggest that the Titans, despite their need of a franchise quarterback, are going with someone else. Probably a defensive end. Maybe an offensive lineman. Most mock draft are predicting Mariota falls to number five or six. We’ve heard the Philadelphia Eagles thinking about angling to select him by moving up, although Chip Kelly has denied those rumors, saying they brought Sam Bradford over so he can play.
According to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, there’s a very real possibility that Mariota will be the number two overall pick, and if that’s the case, he’s going to be tabbed as the starter heading into training camp, leaving Zach Mettenberger and others to try and battle from the bottom of the pecking order. But wait… can Mariota be a number one overall pick? Not just two or below?
An interesting statement from Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-owner Joel Glazer makes the whole Winston to Tampa Bay thing questionable. According to Glazer, taking either Winston or Mariota at number one is fine by him, and that he has full confidence in Lovie Smith and his staff to turn things around for a team that went 2-14 in the 2014 season.
With anybody we’re looking to draft, we do an extensive amount of work on their background, history and all that. We spent time with Jameis and Marcus and went into everything into their background. After everything we’ve done and where we’re at right now, we’re comfortable where Jameis is at, we’re comfortable with Marcus or whoever else it could be.
