It’s hard out there in the free agency market as Michael Crabtree is beginning to find out. Right now, his only options, at best, are going back to the San Francisco 49ers or signing with the Miami Dolphins.
Other suggestions of interest? The Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers have been mentioned as potential destinations, but Crabtree has only had one visit so far, and that was in Miami with the Dolphins. Right now Crabtree seems to be very patient for the right offer, and it’s not just about the money, but also about the offense he’s going to get involved with.
What does that mean? Crabtree wants to be in a pass heavy offense. Knowing he’s no longer a number one receiving option, something he was for a very short time with the 49ers, going to a place where the ball spends a lot of time in the air promises him plenty of catches and a role as a possession receiver or being the “big” receiver after losing a lot of speed over the last couple of years.
The 49ers are willing to bring him back, but Crabtree is worried about the team’s offense being too run oriented. The departure of Greg Roman, Jim Harbaugh and also that of Frank Gore could mean a number of things as to their plans for next year when they have the ball, but for now Crabtree continues to seek what’s out there for him.
One of the problems for Crabtree isn’t just the offenses he’s looking for. There is a perception about him as being constantly unhappy. As a rookie he held out for more money and missed a few games. He seems to be always unhappy about his role with the team. His injuries that have made him into a rather slow receiver haven’t helped, which can easily be seen in the very little interest he has received so far around the league although that can be said for almost all receivers.
