NFL Rumors – Buffalo Bills Might Start Tyrod Taylor at Quarterback

Tyrod Taylor

The Buffalo Bills remain in non-playoff purgatory, and their quarterback situation isn’t very promising, as Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Jeff Tuel and even Tyrod Taylor are heading into training camp with a chance to win the starting position.

A new head coach who has never been with any of these guys means a wide open competition. Ryan actually tried to trade for Taylor while he was still with the Jets, so he might be inclined to give the 25 year old out of Virginia Tech more of a chance than he has with the Baltimore Ravens.

Tyrod Taylor’s kind of a wild card. Nobody really knows about him. All I know is he’s the fastest quarterback in the league. He’s had some good tape in preseason in particular. Didn’t play so well the one regular-season game he really played against Cincinnati in 2012. I tried to trade for him when I was with the Jets. I think he’ll have a chance. He’s got great run skills. I’m not going to say he’s Russell Wilson, but he’s got a little of that in him where he’s able to run zone reads and pull the ball down and be effective.

Not that Taylor stood a chance in Baltimore, playing backup for Joe Flacco. In four years with the Ravens he has never started a game, compiling a modest stat sheet of 19 completions on 35 attempts, throwing two interceptions and zero touchdowns. His running has been more impressive with 136 yards on 27 carries, including one rushing touchdown.

Cassel might be the favorite and certainly has the more impressive career out of the four. He is 33-38 as a starter and started three times for the Vikings last season, completing 57.7% of his passes, throwing three touchdown passes and four interceptions.

Manuel was drafted as the quarterback of the future for the Bills, but hasn’t won himself too many fans since getting the gig. He is 6-8 as a starter, playing just five times last season, completing 58.6% of his passes in the two years he’s been there, throwing 16 touchdowns passes as opposed to 12 interceptions.

And if Taylor is a wild card, than what is Tuel? Tuel, 24, wasn’t even drafted, but has been with the Bills since 2013. He has one career start and didn’t play a single snap last season. He has a 44.1% completion ratio, throwing one touchdown pass and three interceptions. It’ll be a shock if he gets to play in 2015.
