The Tennessee Titans haven’t announced anything official about their starting quarterback next season, but all signs indicate that Zach Mettenberger, after a forgettable rookie campaign which lasted half a season, is the guy to start behind center in 2015.
In a post that’s pretty much a rant against Ruston Webster, the Titans’ general manager, David Climer of the Tennessean doesn’t just talk about the underwhelming success the team has had under Webster in the draft, but also the fact that despite not announcing it, both he and Ken Whisenhunt have decided that Mettenberger is going to be the team’s starting quarterback next season.
Mettenberger started in six games last season, all losses, completing 59.8% of his passes, throwing eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions. Overall, not too bad; certainly something to work with. But is that the guy this franchise, which has forgotten what success and consistency looks like, needs as its starting quarterback?
We’ve been hearing a lot of noise about Marcus Mariota at number two overall. We’ve also been hearing about trades that include that number two overall pick in order to get a veteran, proven starting quarterback. The hottest name has been Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers. The other one has been Jay Cutler, but it’s hard to imagine any team actually trying to acquire him.
For now, it’s Mettenberger, who wasn’t too impressive in college playing for LSU, but Whisenhunt and Webster feel like they’ve got a steal with him in the sixth round. For a team that’s hit a new low or at least their lowest in quite a while, going with Mettenberger and addressing other needs in the draft is a big gamble, and one that better pay off or both guys are going to be out of a job very soon.
