The New Orleans Pelicans haven’t been to the postseason in four years, but all of that might change with one more win. A 100-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves might mean Anthony Davis can start carving out his own playoff legacy.
Davis scored 24 points and was helped by 22 points from both Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans. Jrue Holiday didn’t play as the Pelicans are taking ti slowly with his recovery, which meant getting only six more points from the other two starters, but the Timberwolves are in no shape to win games or in the mood to win them either. Zach LaVine and Andre Wiggins seem to be competing in putting up big numbers, not winning basketball games.
So the Pelicans at 44-37 are 8th in the West. Their record is identical to the Thunder, but they beat them three out of four times this season, giving them the tiebreaker edge. The only way for the Pelicans to lose their hold on the final spot in the Western conference postseason is if the Thunder win their remaining game and the Pelicans lose. Facing the Spurs makes it completely plausible considering the Spurs have something to play for.
The other bad thing going for the Pelicans is the Timberwolves playing the Thunder on the final game of the season. A team in tank mode since pretty early this season, another loss will give them the best odds of finishing first in the draft lottery. Finishing with the worst record would give them a 25 percent chance at the No. 1 pick. Minnesota has never drafted first overall.
After losing four in a row in late March things seemed to be quite desperate for the Pelicans, but they’ve won seven of their last 10 games which has included a tough road schedule and a win over the Golden State Warriors. There’s no deserve in basketball and the Pelicans inconsistencies on offense have caused them to blow opportunities earlier this season, but when it’s all up to them, with a chance to start taking this franchise on a higher path to success, it’d be quite a shame if everything got ruined on the final day of the season.
