He’s not going to be one of the first wide receivers to be taken off the board, but Tyler Lockett out of Kansas State is one of the more versatile in this draft, having the Detroit Lions and the Philadelphia Eagles taking a close, hard look at him.

Lockett spent four seasons with the Wildcats, and was especially impressive in 2013 and 2014. He caught 187 passes for 2777 yards and 22 touchdowns over the last couple of years, leading the Big 12 in receiving yards and division I in punt return average. He was twice in the All-Big 12 team and was also a consensus All-American last season.

So why isn’t Lockett an automatic, high first round pick? He’s not big, and he right now looks more like a guy who is going to be used a slot receiver and a return specialist. Overall that might be very useful, but it usually doesn’t get you picked in the first round. Lockett, holding the records for receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, 100-yard receiving games, kickoff-return attempts and kickoff-return yards at Kansas State, is not going to fall too far.

The Detroit Lions need a return man and most of the wide receivers they’ve had for visits and workouts are return men as well. Right now, with Calvin Johnson (if he’s healthy) and Golden Tate, it’s going to be difficult finding a lot of catches for someone like Lockett, but the Lions are always in need of someone who is something of a game changer like Lockett.

The Eagles always think a little bit out of the box, and someone as versatile as Lockett seems to fit the Chip Kelly plan like a glove, although the thing Kelly is trying to do seems to change with every passing day, and no one is quite sure how the Eagles are going to look next season. The Eagles have the 52nd overall pick, the Lions hold the 54th.
