Don’t expect the Dallas Cowboys to go after a running back at all costs in the 2015 NFL Draft, but to focus more on improving their defense, the weakest part of their successful previous season.
They did lose DeMarco Murray, but the perception in Dallas is that with the offensive line they have, it doesn’t matter who is running the ball. Darren McFadden isn’t exactly one player to count on to recreate the numbers Murray had last season, but that’s the most pressing need.
And this isn’t just theory. Jerry Jones is saying that defense is more important right now. You know, the owner and general manager who makes all the decisions. Although before draft day, saying such a thing might be something of a smokescreen.
And there’s also the fact that this is a deep running back class, without a lot of players who’ll be taken in the first round. Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon are the big names, but there’s a chance that at least one of them drops further down the rabbit hole.
The Cowboys are considering turning their 27th overall into more picks further down the second or third day of the draft. Then they can get more value out of the pick when they take a running back, because having someone to backup the often injured McFadden isn’t such a bad idea.
