Everything is kind of murky revolving La’el Collins and his status, but the former LSU offensive lineman is getting interest from almost every team in the NFL, already meeting with the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.
Collins, a first-team All-SEC selection last season, was projected to be taken in the first round, but the murder of his former girlfriend, Brittney Mills, who was carrying a baby at the time (the unborn child died a week later in the hospital) has turned his life around. Collins, according to Louisiana officials, is not a suspect officially, but that status can change.
Most of the NFL is waiting. Collins tried to change his draft situation once news broke out that he’s going to be interviewed by the police for his potential involvement in the case. He tried moving up to the 2016 draft or entering the supplemental draft, but the NFL refused him that change. Collins has been interviewed by the police, and is now hoping that he’s ruled out, and can sign with a team as an undrafted free agent.
Rex Ryan just so happened to be in Louisiana and met with Collins, without clearing it through Collins’ reps. The Dolphins have also met with the 6’4 offensive tackle who grew up in Baton Rouge before doing an excellent job for the Tigers over the years, putting on some impressive numbers at the combine before everything changed for him.
Collins, according to his attorney, answered every question asked of him and did not plea the fifth, and is ready to get his life back, which means finding an NFL team to sign with. The police have not named him as a suspect or even as a person of interest in the investigation, but it is possible he’ll be brought back for more questioning, and if and when new evidence comes up, things might change for Collins who right now is hoping to put all this ordeal behind him so his pro career can start.
