The San Francisco 49ers aren’t done adding players to their defense next season, putting their eye on Lance Briggs, who has played his entire career with the Chicago Bears.
Briggs hasn’t just played for the Bears. He was one of the best linebackers in the NFL for most of his time with the team, making seven Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections. He has played 173 games in 12 NFL seasons (began his career in 2003) but only 17 times over the last two seasons, playing more as a weak side linebacker.
The 49ers, using a 3-4 defense, are likely to start NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite at inside linebacker next season, and they also signed Philip Wheeler from the Miami Dolphins, but didn’t draft an inside linebacker in the draft, which means they’re probably going to fill that need through free agency. The Niners also signed linebacker Nick Bellore in early April.
In the draft they selected three defensive players with their first three picks: Defensive ends Arik Armstead and Eli Harold; and safety Jaquiski Tartt. The rest of the draft was used to add tight ends (Blake Bell, Rory Anderson), a running back (Mike Davis), wide receiver (DeAndre Smelter), a punter and two guards (Ian Silberman, Trenton Brown).
