There’s no holdout coming from Muhammad Wilkerson, but the New York Jets and their All-Pro defensive end are far from agreeing on a suitable contract extension.

According to Ian Rapoport, Mo Wilkerson’s agent says his client “is willing to put the team ahead of his own contractual status.” Mo would “prefer” to retire with the Jets. But that’s something we always hear from players during negotiations. The fact is that Wilkerson wants more money than he’s being offered, which he has every right to do.

And retire with the Jets? Wilkerson isn’t 26 yet. There’s a long time before retirement comes into the picture. Right now he’s a defensive end in the prime of his career who has had two excellent years which earned him All-Pro mentions through different publications, while playing for a very bad team with a better defense.

How does this end? Wilkerson is back at the minicamp workouts and isn’t holding out. He seems to be quite willing to get something done with the Jets, even if it means making less money than he would be on the open market as a free agent (unless they franchise tag him) next year. But how low is he willing to go? Right now, as far as the Jets are concerned, not low enough.
