NFL Rumors – Seattle Seahawks & Russell Wilson Not That Far Apart?

For a while now, it seems that the Seattle Seahawks and Russell Wilson are very far apart in their contract talks. But maybe things are in a better situation than the two sides, through the media, are letting us believe.

Speaking from his camp, the Russell Wilson passing academy, Wilson made it seem like he’s thinking very different thoughts about the whole situation at the moment.

The contract will work out. It will work itself out. I’m excited about it. I’m excited to hopefully be a Seattle Seahawks for a very, very long time. So that’s the goal.

What’s different about it? Over the last couple of months, Wilson had done everything to make it seem like he doesn’t care about the contract. As if he knows something others don’t. About playing the final year of his rookie deal vastly underpaid, or not minding leaving the Seahawks when it’s time. He even talked about Baseball, but those are all negotiation ploys.

Maybe this is Wilson trying to make it seem like it’s all about the Seahawks and not himself, but it’s never that way. Maybe things have taken a turn for the better in the negotiations.

Wilson wants to be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. He wants a deal that surpasses Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers signed a five-year, $110 million contract in 2013. Wilson wants more than that. In terms of total numbers, it’s fine. The salary cap rises each year, so it’s more about the percentage his contracts eats out of the cap, not the actual amount of money he makes. But even through that thinking, the Seahawks don’t think he’s worth that much. Or maybe they’re coming around?

Wilson is entering the final year of his rookie deal. The Seahawks have the option of using the franchise tag on him in 2016, but that will cost them at least $23 million.
