Part of the hopeful improvement the Buffalo Bills will experience this season will be Charles Clay, a tight end they signed in the offseason, and overall involving more tight ends in their offense.

Clay, 25, is a four-year veteran, all of those seasons in Miami. He caught 58 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns, slightly less involved in the offense than he was in 2013, but was considered a very good player to go after in this offseason. The Bills, making a coaching change and bringing over Rex Ryan, won the sweepstakes for Clay. He signed a five-year deal worth $38 million, $24.5 million of it guaranteed.

The new offensive coordinator for the Bills, Greg Roman, is just as important. MarQueis Gray is the number two TE on the depth chart, and he has called Roman’s offense a Tight End heaven.

But besides Roman, Clay and Gray, there’s the issue of the quarterback. Right now EJ Manuel looks like the leading candidate to start in week 1 despite the doubts surrounding him after his first two seasons in the league.

The Bills finished 9-7 last season with Kyle Orton starting at quarterback for most of the season, retiring after the last game. Scott Chandler, no longer with the team, was the leading receiver among tight ends (fourth overall on the team) with 497 yards. No receiver caught for over 1000 yards last season on Buffalo, but Sammy Watkins (982) and Robert Woods certainly look more than capable of doing so.
