All the teams have come to long-term agreements with their franchise tagged players or signed them on one-year tenders.. All of them, but Jason Pierre-Paul who along with the New York Giants might have other things on his mind right now.

It’s quite unclear whether Pierre-Paul will play anytime soon for the Giants, as his July 4 fireworks accident resulted in him needing a finger amputated, and now it remains to be seen if it’s going to be the injury or contract dispute that costs him playing time.

This isn’t the first time in NFL history that a player has held out from playing games before signing something and taking the contract dispute well into the season. It’s been quite a while since it’s happened, though; Walter Jones (Seahawks, 2002) is the last player to hold out on signing anything, carrying it two games into the regular season before signing his one-year tender and played in week 3. Sean Gilbert of the Washington Redskins sat out the entire season in 1997.

The Giants and Pierre-Paul are probably going to wait for his injury situation to clear up before possibly picking up the contract talks. It might be cruel, but it simply didn’t make sense for the Giants to sign him to a new, long-term deal without knowing how this injury is going to affect him and his production on the field.
