NFL Rumors – Arizona Cardinals Interested in Signing Chris Cooley

The Arizona Cardinals are thinking about more than just one tight end at the moment, but one of the names on their shortlist is Chris Cooley, who has played his entire career for the Washington Redskins, and has been out of the league for almost three years.

Cooley never actually retired, but went into broadcasting after the 2012 season. That year he was cut by the Redskins before the season began, but due to the Fred Davis injury he was brought back to play nine games.

Cooley is interested in coming back and has been working hard to get his 33-year old body ready for a possible return to the NFL. At his best, the former third-round draft pick (2004) by the Redskins was one of the premier tight ends in the NFL, making the Pro Bowl in 2007 and 2008 and being named to one All-Pro team in 2005.

The Cardinals prefer signing Jermaine Gresham, but it’s between them and the New Orleans Saints. The competition for Cooley, who caught just one pass in his nine appearances for the Redskins in 2012, doesn’t exist.

Cooley has said once or twice that it’s going to be weird for him playing or a team other than the Redskins, but he’s past that stage of fearing his legacy with just one team, realizing that if he has any sort of chance to extend his NFL career, it’s going to be with a different team.
