Match Highlights – PSG vs Lyon (Trophée des Champions)

Despite the winds of change of last season coming from Lyon, nothing changed in the French Super Cup, the Trophée des Champions held in Montreal, as PSG beat the second-place team last season in Ligue 1 2-0 with early first half goals by Serge Aurier and Edinson Cavani.

We haven’t seen some lavish spending by PSG this summer. A reasonable €28.1 million for three players, while selling Yohan Cabaye for half that sum. They are after Angel di Maria and maybe some more surprises, but they’re also trying to find a way of offloading Zlatan Ibrahimovic and his massive salary, while the Swede played his part in yet another trophy capture while thinking about the next step, maybe the final one, of his illustrious career.

Lyon showed defensive problems all through the preseason, including by conceding six goals from Arsenal. They didn’t make fools out of themselves in Canada, but looked disorganized during the first half and were lucky not to pick up a few more balls out of Anthony Lopes’ net. Relying on mostly young, local players is fine, but in the new rule book set by PSG, making it to the Champions League and maybe making an effort to challenge for the title is the best a club like Lyon can hope for.

PSG are heading towards a season in which it is once again them and the rest of France. They’ve won three consecutive league titles, including the treble last season. The challenge, once again, is winning the Champions League, something they haven’t been close to doing so far. The additions of Aurier, Kevin Trapp and Benjamin Stambouli might not be enough to get them closer to achieving that goal.
