There were questions about Jameis Winston and his maturity or behavior as he entered the NFL draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked past his problems during his Florida State time, banking on him turning a page towards professionalism, if the problems the media loved reporting on were that big of an issue to begin with.

Winson was the number one overall pick in the 2015 draft, going to the success hungry Buccaneers, winning just two games last season. Winston isn’t just expected to play quarterback. He’s expected to drag this franchise back into the playoffs, and as quickly as possible turn them into something that’s more than a doormat. Tampa might not be a central hub of the national media which means more patience and less pressure compared to franchises that get reported on more often, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to be operating under radio silence.

I’ve matured since I was an 18-year-old kid, just getting into mischievous things. But now I love this opportunity that I’ve been given. It’s a blessing. The best thing about it is my dream always was to be a professional quarterback, and I’ve achieved that dream. On this team, I’m just accepting my role. We have a lot of veterans. Vincent [Jackson], Gerald [McCoy] — those guys are our leaders. Accused of sexaul assault when he was 18 but never charged with prosecutors citing a lack of evidence. He was questioned by police for some BB gun fight with other players in 2012. Winston was caught shoplifting crab legs and suspended for a game after shouting a vulgar phrase on campus.

But NFL teams do extensive research on the players they intend to draft. The Buccaneers decided they’re fine with Wilson’s antics, and feel it won’t damage his NFL career. They cared a lot more about him winning the Heisman trophy, and helping Florida State win one national title and go undefeated through the 2014 regular season.
