Unless there’s some dramatic turn in the negotiations (that aren’t really happening anymore), Eric Weddle is going to play one more season for the San Diego Chargers before moving on, as there doesn’t seem to be too much love between the two sides.

Weddle is a three-time Pro Bowler an two-time All-Pro selection. He still isn’t 31, and is entering his ninth season in the league and with the Chargers. The sixth highest paid safety in the league ($8 million per season on average), it’s weird to see the Chargers not even talking to Weddle, the team’s defensive leader for quite some time and a hugely popular figure among the fanbase.

Maybe it has something to do with the Chargers’ impending move to Los Angeles, and starting something new. The Chargers haven’t gotten anywhere with Philip Rivers who becomes a free agent at the end of this season. Maybe they plan on using the franchise tag on Weddle? Maybe on Rivers? Either way, if the goal is to sign both of them, they’ll need to extend someone.

Weddle himself has pretty much cut off the communications channel with the front office, unhappy with how the Chargers were handling the negotiations. Obviously, it’s never just about one side of the equation being in the wrong and the other one being a complete saint or entirely naive. But Weddle wants to stay. The Chargers? They wouldn’t mind keeping him, but it probably depends on how much he’s willing to settle for. It’s usually about money, nothing else.
