The Philadelphia Eagles surprised many by releasing Evan Mathis this offseason, but it might be even more surprising that the Pro Bowl guard is still without a team. Lately, he’s been picking up interest from the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets.

Mathis is going to turn 34 during this season which means there are concerns about his age. He also missed seven games last season, but that was during the first half of the campaign. He came back and looked healthy. The reason he was cut by the Eagles has been the same reason Chip Kelly has been making a lot of his moves – money.

And money seems to be what’s keeping Mathis from signing with new teams. The combination of his demands (was supposed to make $5.5 million in 2015 as base salary) and his age is keeping teams away from him.

The Jets are looking into the Mathis option, but right now, seem to be discouraged by the price that he’s asking. Mathis doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to sign with anyone, and is keeping the cards close to his chest.

He’s also currently in discussions with the Dolphins, the Jets’ division rivals. Maybe the Dolphins don’t mind spending a bit more money on an offensive line that did put Ryan Tannehill on the spot a few times last season, and could use an upgrade, even if it’s a player who doesn’t have too many years left in the league.
