Is a season over at 0-5? Probably, but the Detroit Lions want to believe that a win over the Chicago Bears this Sunday can mean something of a turnaround. Momentum is king in the NFL (and in sports generally), and this might be the last opportunity to get something out of this season.
The fallout from the home defeat against the Arizona Cardinals and especially the Matthew Stafford benching has been minimal. There’s no quarterback controversy, no calls for Stafford’s head. The main focus right now is making something out of the worst running game in the NFL, with the Lions averaging 48.8 yards per game this season.
Ameer Abdullah looked like the answer during the preseason, but he has done very poorly so far this season, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry and fumbling the ball twice. Joique Bell hasn’t been doing too many impressive things himself, but considering how poorly Abdullah has been doing holding on to the ball.
The Bears might be on a two-game winning streak, but they just might be the weakest team the Lions have faced this season. With Detroit facing a relatively comfortable schedule coming up, with Minnesota and the Vikings coming up after their game against Chicago, there’s a window of opportunity to stop the depressing start to this season and sprinkle a little bit of hope on what’s left it.
Obviously, there’s more to just hoping and trying harder in the NFL and if Jim Caldwell can’t find a way for his team to improve on both sides of the ball, the calls for his head and for maybe more significant changes will become louder and more decisive in the final 10 weeks of the season.
