Goals & Highlights – Manchester City vs Liverpool

Liverpool beat Manchester City

The best match under Jurgen Klopp for Liverpool, and probably their best in over a season, beating Manchester City away from home for the first time after ten matches, winning 4-1 with goals from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Martin Skrtel and an early own goal by Eliaquim Mangala that allowed the demolition to begin.

The loss drops City to third in the league, behind both Manchester United and the stunning Leicester City and the Jamie Vardy phenomenon. Both Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure were on the pitch, and so was enemy number one for Liverpool, Raheem Sterling, but the pace and work ethic from Liverpool was too much for the hosts, who seemed clueless in how to handle the high pressure and the counter attacking style with their slow, unreactive midfield.

Firmino has been a different player under Klopp and provided his best match for the team. Not just the goal and assist, but every touch and possession resulting in something dangerous near Joe Hart’s goal. He and Coutinho are turning into a very dangerous duo, and all that’s left for James Milner, Emre Can and Lucas is to stay out of the way and defend without trying anything too complicated.

Aguero scored a goal that felt a bit out of touch with what was happening on the pitch. City looked to run of ideas quickly in the second half and lost control of the midfield very quickly. Liverpool were rewarded for their dominance as Christian Benteke, by mistake, set up a wonderful Martin Skrtel goal, pushing the Reds to ninth, but only one point from fifth place.
