The League of Ireland Premier Division doesn’t usually offer moments that are worth talking about on a more than regional, possible national level, but Greg Bolger scoring a beautiful goal to kick off St Patrick’s Athletic championship winning game against Sligo Rovers provides a wonderful exception.
Not really known for his goal scoring prowess, Bolger found the perfect time to score his first goal of the season; against a direct rival for the title. He actually looked kind of surprised as the ball went in, scoring his first goal of the season to open the 2-0 win over a team that was only four points behind them. The win clinched the championship for St Pat’s, winning the title for the ninth time and first since 2002.
With the win, they booked a place in the Champions League qualifying stages for the 2014-2015 season, which can’t come soon enough after their own European experience of this season ended quite abruptly, knocked out by Zalgiris Vilnius in the first round of the Europa League qualifiers.
