Sergio Ramos didn’t like the way Jose Mourinho talked about the Real Madrid players after their 1-0 loss to Sevilla last week, and reacted to the accusation of playing without focus, purpose and heart. A few days later, one of Real’s most permanent figures in their lineup, not to mention the national team, found himself on the bench in the Champions League win over Manchester City.
Young Raphael Varane got the chance to start, his first match of the season. No injury was reported about Ramos, who sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes. Conclusion? Jose Mourinho might be angry at Ramos for daring to speak and counter Mourinho, especially after such a bad performance.
This isn’t the first time Ramos has had a falling out with Mourinho. Back in January, following a cup defeat to Barcelona Sergio Ramos made some comment that aggravated his Portuguese manager. This time, despite possibly being Real’s best option in the back four, as a centre back or as a full back, Ramos got the bench treatment. Another match with Ramos featuring in the lineup (Rayo Vallecano) on Sunday might actually put some merit behind these rumors.
A club that might have a slight interest in Ramos are Chelsea, unhappy with their right back situation. Branislav Ivanovic isn’t the worst player to have at the position in the world, but he’s much better in the middle of the defense, and lack the ability and speed to provide substantial support in most matches striding down the flank. Ramos is an option for all four defensive positions, and is a much better attacking presence than anyone on the Chelsea defensive roster.
Obviously, the 26 year old, if will actually become unsettled with Real, will attract more than just Chelsea’s attention, as the prominent star hunters like PSG, Manchester City and maybe other clubs (United?) probably attentive to the situation and progress.
Ramos was purchased in 2005, as 19 year old, from Sevilla from €27 million, making him one of the most expensive defenders of all time. He has played 317 times for the club, scoring 36 goals and winning three La Liga titles. He has appeared 95 times for the Spanish national team, winning two Euro tournament and the 2010 World Cup.
