Sometimes, and era can be captured with one single photo. Reggie Miller wasn’t the biggest NBA star of his playing days; There were bigger musical stars and sitcoms than Will Smith and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air; Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) is a great character, but the 1990’s had better.
Still, there’s a reason you see millions of “If you like this, you’re a 90’s kid” memes and posts and what not on the internet these days. People who grew up and molded their cultural (if you can call pop culture that) point of view of the world during that time can’t help but feel a special connection to this picture and these people.
Reggie Miller was cool back then. He still is now, by the way. The Indiana Pacers were a trendy team, not just in the Midwest or the United States, but Pacers jerseys with #31 on them, with Miller above the number were quite the fashion item, as hard as it is to believe. The rivalry with the Knicks and in general all the went down in the Eastern Conference until the moment Jordan retired was what made the NBA great those years.
Will Smith? He’s probably in a very different place now, but I don’t know a person who was a teenager or younger at that time who didn’t know the lyrics to the opening theme of his Fresh Prince TV show. Later on he became an action star, Oscar-nominated caliber actor and in general, one of the biggest stars in the world today. But back then, he was simply cool and fun, which is always what you want to remember from the past.
Urkel? It was never one of the funniest shows on TV, but family matters had its charm for a while, mostly because of Steve Urkel (Jaleel White, who hasn’t done much since) and a bit because of Carl Winslow, big guy. The show was OK until it was obvious White was straining his voice too much to sound like a whiny nerd, and the whole alter-ego thing ruined it for me, and probably slowly for everyone else. But he’s still a memorable part of that decade, even if it’s hard to believe that S&^% was funny looking back at it now.
