Imagine beating the best side in world Rugby only for it, in the end, to not mean much. That’s how England players must be feeling after losing to South Africa in the Rugby World Cup final. The memes, as you might imagine, weren’t easy on them.
England and South Africa came into the final with the same game plan. Control the scrum, control territory and kick accurately. It worked for the Springboks. Not so much for England.
And the more they crashed onto the South African wall, the more undisciplined they became, and the more mistakes they made. In the end, they fell apart.
South Africa become the first side to lose a group stage match (to New Zealand, who England beat in the semi final) and go on to win the World Cup. Records are meant to be broken. Truths made to be adjusted. Once again, the Rugby World Cup taught us something new. Except the fact that England will somehow mess it up. That, except for one time, doesn’t change.
