Dan Uggla’s Hitting Streak Reaches 30 (Braves vs Marlins)

Dan Uggla didn’t help his batting average or the rest of those numbers on another ugly hitting night. One for six, striking out twice, leaving 5 on base. Still, his hit in the fifth drew more cheers from the dugout than Martin Prado’s go ahead single in the 11th inning, giving the Braves (68-49) a 4-3 over the Florida Marlins, their second straight win against them before the series ends today.

Martin Prado finished with 4-6 and 3 RBIs, but despite his big night (fifth career game with four hits and first since May 2010), Uggla was receiving all the attention. His average took another dip, but after getting it to .220, much better than the .173 before the streak began, the lowest average for a hitter at the beginning of a 30 game hitting streak since 1918. Aren’t stats fun?

Uggla became the 55th player to get a hit for 30 consecutive games, and the second in 2011, joining Andre Ethier. Getting to 31 will put him in a list of only 34 players. Next up to stop Uggla’s streak? Anibal Sanchez (6-5, 3.73 ERA). Uggla has 3 at bats against Sanchez, getting one hit, a home run. I’m betting on him to continue his streak. His numbers may be unimpressive, but he’s getting those hit.

If he makes it to 31 he’ll be tied with Rico Carty with the longest streak in Atlanta Braves uniform. Tommy Holmes, with 37, has the franchise best, from the Boston Braves era.
