Dan Uggla didn’t just get another hit to extend his hitting streak to 31, the longest in the Majors since Chase Utley’s 36 in 2006. He hit 3-5 with 2 RBIs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Florida Marlins 6-2, completing a series sweep in Miami, improving to 69-49 and keeping their firm grip of the Wild Card spot in the NL.

It was Uggla’s third 3 hit game this month and ninth multi-hit game since beginning his streak in early July. His batting average is now up to .224. Remember when it .173 just over a month ago? Now Uggla is part of a group consisting of 35 players to have a hitting streak of 31 games or longer. The 32nd hit, which will have to wait to August 12, when the Braves begin their home stand against the Cubs, will put him in a tighter of group of 24 players.

More on Uggla’s place in history? His position. The longest streak for a 2B is 35. Chase Utley of the Phillies which we’ve mentioned earlier and Luis Castillo back in 2002, when he was with the Florida Marlins. In between Uggla and them is Rogers Hornsby with 33, achieved in 1922 with the Cardinals.

Dan Uggla wasn’t the only hot bat for the Bravs – Martin Prado continued his hot streak in the series, getting two hits and scoring two runs, making it 7-14 in the series with 5 RBIs. Jose Constanza got 3 hits as well and continued his super hot August and start to his Major League career – He has a .413 batting average since joining the Braves and .455 in August.

Tim Hudson (12-7, 3.18 ERA) had a strong showing – he did get scored on twice, but that happened only in the eighth. He struck out 7, winning his third straight start.

Next up to stop Uggla? Carlos Zambrano. Uggla’s 1-9 against Zambrano in his career, and Zambrano is in rather decent form of late – He’s won three of his last four starts with his ERA at 4.46. Still, he isn’t dominant – he hasn’t had a shutout in quite some time and has allowed at least 7 hits in each of his last 5 games.
