Dan Uggla’s hitting streak just gets better and better. It’s not that he’s reached 32. After getting 3 hits to cap off the sweep in the Marlins series, Uggla homered twice against Carlos Zambrano yesterday, reaching 26 this season, as the Atlanta Braves opened their series against the Chicago Cubs with a 10-4 win in Turner Field.

With 32 Uggla now owns the longest streak in Atlana Braves history, besting Rico Carty’s 31 from 1970. This was Uggla’s second multiple home run game this month and his first home run since August 6. He went 3-3, 2 RBIs along with those 2 home runs. His seasonal batting average is now up to .229, over 50 points better than when he started the streak. He’s hitting .355 with 12 home runs since beginning the streak on July 5.

Another story was Carlos Zambrano’s awful night. He got ejected in the middle of the fifth inning after sending two inside pitches towards Chipper Jones. He also hit Dan Uggla earlier. Zambrano (dropping to 9-7, 4.46 ERA) allowed 8 runs and 8 hits during his short but memorable outing. As usual, a bad display led to him declaring he’s contemplating retirement. Nothing new from the Venezuelan pitcher, who has 125 wins in his 11 seasons with the Cubs.

Chipper Jones (2-4, HR, 3 RBIs) and a red hot Jose Constanza (1-3, 2 RBIs) enjoyed the day against the Cubbies as well. Constanza is hitting .408 in his short MLB career and an OPS of 1.023. Mike Minor got his second win in 8 starts, striking out six in 5 and 2/3 innings.

Uggla’s up next against Matt Garza (5-9, 3.81 ERA). He’s 3-9 against Garza in his career with one RBI and striking out twice. No. 33 will put him on a shortlist of currently 22 players.
