Dawson – Hopkins Rematch Unlikley

For one obvious reason, being the fact that Chad Dawson’s Saturday night win by a super controversial TKO over Bernard Hopkins, winning the WBC Light Heavyweight title, there definitely should be a rematch between the two. We, the fans, and the sports integrity itself deserves a clear cut decision.

Promoters and fighters see things differently. Hopkins wasn’t too keen on taking on Dawson in the first place. Going down to fight a middleweight like Sergio Martinez was his preferred option. Now, there are even talks of retiring from the 46 year old, the oldest fighter to win a title belt. Dawson? He got what he came for, and he doesn’t seem to care what the governing bodies may decide. He doesn’t want a fight against Hopkins again.

Gary Shaw, Dawson’s promoter, said that even if Dawson is forced to give up his WBC belt, which has already happened before, he won’t be fighting Bernard Hopkins again. We’ve given up belts before.

For Dawson, a rematch against Jean Pascal, the only loss of his career, is the more likely option. Further in the future? Nathan Cleverly, the Welsh WBO champion, would very much like a unification bout with Dawson, or anyone who holds the belt when the opportunity presents itself. Dawson, after Joe Calzaghe fought Roy Jones Jr., offered the undefeated Welshman a fight, in Wales. Calzaghe preferred to retire as a champion, undefeated, at the peak of his career.

For Hopkins, it’s also a matter of money. Golden Boy Promoters claim that Dawson doesn’t add any interest to the fight. Not enough Radio or TV outlets care about him to be worth another shot.
