Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Fight Not Happening

Manny Pacquiao will fight in May, but not May 5, and not Floyd Mayweather. Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum announced that Pacquiao has decided on his next opponent out of the known shortlist of four fighters, which don’t include Mayweather. The reason? According to Arum purely financial.

So it’ll can be a rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez, who has already lost twice to Manny Pacquiao and finished one fight (2004) in a draw. It can be Miguel Cotto, who has also traded blows with Pacquiao, mostly receiving them in a 12th round TKO loss. The non-rematch options will be (up until now) Light Welterweights Lamont Peterson or Timothy Bradley.

Arum says the Mayweather fight will happen, but only in November, if at all – Economically, it’s a problem that Floyd created. The amount that would be lost by moving it up to May 5  is enormous. The fight is not going to happen on May 5. We’ll do the fight in November. There is no real magic in doing it in May.

Arum is thinking big for Pacquiao’s next fight, and a Las Vegas Casino, the MGM Grand for that matter, isn’t enough. Pacquiao has already fought in Cowboys Stadium against Antonio Margarito, and it seems that an outdoor venue, with a capacity of near 40,000 fans, is the plan. According to Arum, it’ll be built pretty soon.

Pacquiao, according to Arum of course, in on board with not facing Mayweather on May 5, which is a date that can’t be moved. Mayweather’s heading to Jail on June 1 anyway, so a June fight’s impossible as well. November? I don’t know if that’s reasonable as well, as Mayweather will only be out of jail for about 3 months at that time.

If you postpone it two or three weeks, you can make so much more money. Mayweather told the court he was committed to fight on May 5. I think they lied and said Pacquiao was ready to fight him. Now they are saying the judge ordered them to fight on May 5? Was the MGM behind this? If the judge says you have to surrender yourself on June 1 what the f— does it matter to the judge if you fight on May 5 or two weeks later?

So what now for Mayweather? Well, two names have been thrown around recently. Robert Guerrero and the more tempting option – Canelo, Saul Alvarez. A dream option? Sergio Martinez. Mayweather actually spoke to reporters today, seriously or not, saying he’s willing to fight Sergio Martinez if Martinez can drop down to 150 pounds. This, however, probably won’t happen this May. Martinez already has a fight with Matthew Macklin in March.
