Mexico won it’s 8th Gold Cup and beat the United States in the US for the first time in 10 years, crushing the Americans 5-0 in front of a sellout pro-Mexican crowd in Giants Stadium.

Everything clicked for the Mexicans in the second half. After the first half ended 0-0, a 54th minute penalty scored by Gerardo Torrado opened the flood gates. The Mexicans began a blitz on US goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who managed to save a few shots but not all of them. Giovani Dos Santos made it 2-0 in the 61st minute, Carlos Vela made it 3-0 in the 66th. Jose Castro and Guillermo Franco finished things off for the Mexicans, who were led by Arsenal’s Carlos Vela during the second half to achieve this amazing result.

Mexico last beat the United States in the US on May 1999. This 5-0 win was the biggest margin of win ever in the Gold Cup Finals and a record of goals scored in the final – beating the 1993 Mexican team that beat the United States 4-0 in Mexico City.
