Once again, the pool brought us the most interesting stories with Yannick Angel of France continuing to dominate in the 200 meters freestyle, blowing everyone out of the water and leaving Ryan Lochte without a medal, while 15 year old Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania became the youngest gold medalist in the pool. China (still leading the medal table) dominated diving and Gymnastics as always while North Korean men continue to dominate weightlifting.

Diving, Men’s synchronized 10 meters platform

The Chinese duo of Cao Yuan and Zhang Yanquan won the obvious gold, while Mexico followed with silver and the United States with bronze.

Fencing, Women’s Epee

Ukraine’s Yana Shemyakina won her first Olympic gold medal with the gold, beating Germany’s Britta Heidemann in the final 9-8. It was Heidemann’s third Olympic medal, failing to defend her gold in the event from Beijing. Sun Yujie of China won the bronze medal.

Gymnastics, Men’s Artistic team all-around

The Chinese team of Chen Yibing, Feng Zhe, Guo Weiyang, Zhang Chenglong and Zou Kai won the gold medal, finishing ahead of Japan (silver) and Great Britain. Two of the Chinese gymnasts were part of the gold medal winning team in Beijing.

Judo, Women’s 57 KG and Men’s 73 KG

Women’s 57 kilograms – The bronze medalist from the 2011 world championships, Kaori Matsumoto of Japan, won the gold after beating Corina Căprioriu from Romania, another bronze medalist from the world’s, in the final. Marti Malloy of the United States and Automne Pavia of France finished with bronze.

Men’s 73 kilograms – Mansur Isaev of Russia won the gold medal, beating the favorite, Riki Nakaya from Japan, the world champion, in the final. Sainjargalyn Nyam-Ochir of Mongolia and Ugo Legrand of France finished with the bronze, as Legrand repeated his achievement from the world championships in 2011.

Shooting – Men’s 10 meters air rifle

Alin Moldoveanu of Romania won gold with a score of 702.1. He was followed by Niccolo Campriani (silver) of Italy and Gagan Narang (bronze) of India.

Swimming

Men’s 200 meters freestyle – Yannick Angel of France continued to dominate the freestyle races, setting a new French record and taking gold with a clear cut victory against a high-quality field, finishing with 1:43.14. Sun Yang, the 400 meters gold medalist, and Park Tae-Hwan of South Korea both touched the wall at the same time, taking a split silver medal with a time of 1:44.93. Ryan Lochte disappointed with a 1:45.04, finishing fourth.

Women’s 100 meters backstroke – 17 year old Missy Franklin of the United States picked up her second medal of the Olympic games and her first of gold, finishing in a time of 58.33, just ahead of Emily Seebohm of Australia who took silver after a gold in the relay and Aya Terakawa of Japan, taking bronze.

Men’s 100 meters backstroke – The Americans continued their domination in this event, taking the gold and silver. Matt Grevers won his third career Olympic gold medal and first in an individual swim, finishing well clear of Nick Thoman and Japan’s Ryosuke Irie with bronze.

Women’s 100 meters breaststroke – The 15-year old sensation from Lithuania, Ruta Meilutyte, became the youngest ever gold medalist in the pool with a 1:05.47, barely beating Rebecca Soni of the United States (1:05.55), leaving Satmo Suzuki of Japan to take home the bronze medal.

Weightlifting Women’s 58 KG – Li Xueying of China took gold, Pimsiri Sirikaew of Thailand took silver, Yuliya Kalina of Ukraine took bronze.

Weightlifting Men’s 62 KG – Kim Un-Guk of North Korea took gold, Oscar Figueroa of Colombia took silver, Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia took bronze.
