Athletics Gold Medal Count of the 2012 Summer Olympics


As with all these Olympics, the Americans come out on top, mostly thanks to the women and Allyson Felix, who took home three gold medals including her first individual gold. Usain Bolt was the big star for the men, winning three gold medals while setting a new Olympic record in the 100 meters and a new world record in the 4×100.

Mo Farah of Great Britain also deserves a special mention, taking the 5000-10000 double, only the 7th man in history to complete that achievement, aiding Great Britain to four gold medals in track & field events. Russian women set the tone for the number two nation, taking six of the eight Russian gold medals.

Number 1, United States – 9 Gold Medals

Men – Aries Merritt in the 110 meters hurdles with 12.92. Christian Taylor in the triple jump with 17.81. Ashton Eaton in the Decathlon with 8869 points.

Women – Allyson Felix in the 200 meters with 21.88. Sanya Richards-Ross in the 400 meters with 49.55. Tianna Madison, Allyson Felix, Bianca Knight and Carmelita Jeter in the 4×100 meters relay with 40.82, a new world record. DeeDee Trotter, Allyson Felix, Francena McCorory and Sanya Richards-Ross in the 4×400 meters relay with 3:16.87. Jenn Suhr in the Pole Vault with 4.75. Brittney Reese in the long jump with 7.12.

The USA also won 13 medals of silver and 7 more of bronze, finishing with 29 medals in total, appearing on the podium in 29 of the 47 events.

Number 2, Russia – 8 Gold Medals

Men – Sergey Kirdyapkin in the 50 kilometers walk with 3:35:59, a new Olympic record. Ivan Ukhov in the high jump with 2.38.

Women – Mariya Savinova in the 800 meters with 1:56.19. Natalya Antyukh in the 400 meters hurdles with 52.70. Yuliya Zaripova in the 3000 meters steeplechase with 9:06.72. Elena Lashmanova in the 20 kilometers walk with 1:25:02, a new world record. Anna Chicherova in the high jump with 2.05. Tatyana Lysenko in the hammer throw with 78.18, a new Olympic record.

The Russian won 10 more medals – 4 of silver and 6 of bronze, finishing with 18 medals in total.

Jamaica – 4 Gold Medals

Men – Usain Bolt in the 100 meters with 19.63, a new Olympic record. Usain Bolt in the 200 meters with 19.32. Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Yohan Blake and Usain Bolt in the 4×100 meters relay with 36.84, a new World record.

Women – Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the 100 meters with 10.75.

Jamaica won 8 more medals, four of silver and four of Bronze, bringing their total up to 12.

Great Britain – 4 Gold Medals

Men – Mo Farah in the 5000 meters with 13:41.66 and also in the 10,000 meters with 27:30.42. Greg Rutherford in the long jump with 8.31.

Women – Jessica Ennis in the Heptathlon with 6955, a new British record.

The British won six medals in total, one silver and one bronze added to their 4 of gold.

Ethiopia – 3 Gold Medals

Only women won gold medals for Ethiopia in these Olympics. Meseret Defar in the 5000 meters with 15:04.25. Tirunesh Dibaba in the 10,000 meters with 30:20.75. Tiki Gelana in the marathon with 2:23:07, a new Olympic record.

Ethiopia finished with a total of 7 medals, one of silver and three of bronze added to the gold.

Kenya – 2 Gold Medals

Only men took gold for Kenya in these rather disappointing Olympic games for them. David Rodisha in the 800 meters with 1:40.91, a new world record. Ezekiel Kemboi in the 3000 meters steeplechase with 8:18.56.

Kenya won 11 medals in total, adding four of silver and five of bronze to the count.

17 More nations one a single gold medal – Germany, Australia, Dominican Republic, France, Poland, Turkey, China, Trinidad & Tobago, Czech Republic, Algeria, Bahamas, Belarus, Croatia, Grenada, Hungary, Kazakhstan and Uganda.
