After 45 minutes, with news of Liverpool’s win over United fresh in the players’ heads, Arsenal looked like on the right way in making it back to the top spot.

A huge mistake by West Ham’s keeper, Robert Green, left Robin Van Persie alone in front of goal, putting the gunners ahead. Twenty minutes later Van Persie was the one crossing, this time taking a corner kick, and William Gallas was at the end of it to make it 2-0. Alessandro Diamanti was there in both of West Ham’s goals – first he shot a fantastic free kick, which was saved, but Calrton Cole was there to score off the rebound. The second one was from Diamanti himself, scoring from the penalty spot, after a very bad call by referee Chris Foy, giving West Ham an undeserved spot kick. Scott Parker got sent off in the 85th minute with a second yellow card.

West Ham still lie deep deep within the Premiership cellar with only 6 points, but this should give the team a hefty morale boost. Arsenal played well in the first half but didn’t carry on in the second, and missed an opportunity to put themselves in a very good position for the first place spot once they complete their game in hand.

Robin Van Persie, 16th minute

William Gallas, 37th minute

Carlton Cole, 74th minute

Alessandro Diamanti, 80th minute
