The Washington Redskins are looking for someone to improve their pass-defense after letting go of the very disappointing DeAngelo Hall recently, and while they have addressed the depth issue at the position, they’re looking for a reliable starter to add to the mix, which seems to be Antoine Winfield from the Minnesota Vikings.
The Redskins aren’t the only team after the 14-year veteran, who also have the Buffalo Bills on his resume from more than a decade ago, but they seem to be in the lead to acquire his services, seeing as he was still a very productive member of the Vikings’ defense last season. Winfield is a three time pro bowler (2008-2010), and had 100 tackles along with 3 interceptions and a sack last season, and despite his age (35) is still very much capable of starting for most teams in the NFL, as long as he isn’t counted upon to be a shut down kind of corner.
The Redskins are a tad limited in their flexibility for free agency with some penalty-cap money hurting their situation. Winfield, who’ll agree to a one-year deal, knowing the forces of the market aren’t in favor of him getting any kind of long term deal, might be the perfect short term solution until they’re free of their cap-limiting problems and look to sing a more permanent solution. E.J. Biggers was signed last week, but it’s quite likely he has been added on to provide a bit of depth as a number 3 corner than a designated starter.
