A new season for Arsenal and disappointment caught them on the first weekend with a home loss against West Ham, including two miserable Petr Cech gaffes. Way up North of there, Newcastle and Southampton pleased the neutrals (not so much the home fans) with an entertaining 2-2 draw. Liverpool finished the day with one wonder strike from Philippe Coutinho to give them a 1-0 win over Stoke. Manchester City had no problem in their Monday night debut, beating West Brom away.
A boring but successful start for Manchester United with a 1-0 win over Tottenham to open the season, while Chelsea stuttered with 10 men at home to get a 2-2 draw against Swansea. Newly promoted sides got a total of one point out of a possible nine with Bournemouth losing to Aston Villa, Norwich to Crystal Palace and Watford drawing with Everton.
West Brom 0 Manchester City 3: Many seemed to be sleeping on Manchester City this offseason, but of the ‘top 4’ club or aspirers, they put in the best performance, with a brace from Yaya Toure and another from Vincent Kompany to sit top of the table after the first week.
Stoke 0 Liverpool 1: Philippe Coutinho scored the best goal of the first week this season. A terrible, boring, sluggish and confused game, but the Brazilian’s strike was worth waiting for.
Arsenal 0 West Ham 2: Not for the first time, Arsenal are stunned at home as they open the season full of hope. Weak defending and a poor performance from Petr Cech helped Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate give the Hammers a shocking win in a stadium they rarely get anything out of.
Newcastle 2 Southampton 2: A very entertaining encounter at St. James Park. Southampton took the lead through Graziano Pelle, but Papiss Cisse and new arrival Georginio Wijnaldum turned things around. As always, the Newcastle defense messed up, and Shane Long scored a late equalizer.
Manchester United 1 Tottenham 0: Not an impressive performance from the Red Devils, but enough for 3 points to start the season with a lot of uncertainties about the lineup. Kyle Walker scored an own goal in the first half as he tried to strip the ball away from Wayne Rooney, and that was about it in terms of interesting opportunities and situations.
Bournemouth 0 Aston Villa 1: Rudy Gestede scored on his Villa debut after only 13 minutes on the pitch, denying Bournemouth their first points in their first ever Premier League match with 18 minutes left on the clock.
Everton 2 Watford 2: An exciting match as expected at Goodison Park. The newly promoted London club took an early lead through Mexican Miguel Layun, and the Wasps held on until the 76th minute when Ross Barkley equalized. Odion Ighalo gave the visitors a late, 83rd minute lead, but Arouna Kone equalized after coming off the bench to split the points.
Leicester 4 Sunderland 2: An impressive performance for the team that had a miraculous rescue last season. Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez (brace) and Marc Albrighton scored for the foxes, while Sunderland got two back in the second half through veterans Jermain Defoe and Steven Fletcher.
Norwich 1 Crystal Palace 3: Palace keep the form that made them the surprise of the season a year ago, getting goals from Wilfried Zaha, Damien Delaney and newcomer Yohan Cabaye, while Nathan Redmond got one back for the Canaries, who will once again struggle to stay in the top division. Cameron Jerome had a goal disallowed which was the worst decision in week 1.
Chelsea 2 Swansea 2: The champions didn’t play well against a very entertaining Swansea side. Oscar scored a somewhat flukey goal in the 23rd minute, but Andre Ayew equalized four minutes later. Swansea had no time to enjoy the goal, because a Willian cross or shot hit a Swansea defender, Federico Fernandez, resulting in a lead for the home side again. In the second half Thibaut Courtois picked up a red card with a clumsy rushing resulting in a trip of Bafetimbi Gomis inside the box, and an equalizing penalty converted by the French striker.
