A weekend that started with a dull win for Manchester United at Villa Park, and was followed with plenty of goals, including three for Everton in Southampton, two of them by Romelu Lukaku; three also for Norwich on the road against Sunderland and four overall in a home draw for Tottenham against Stoke, while Leicester remain on top of the table with an away win against West Ham.
Liverpool 1 Bournemouth 0: Christian Benteke scores his first goal for Liverpool off of a Jordan Henderson cross, although according to the new rules, it should have been ruled offside due to Philippe Coutinho’s involvement. The Reds are one of four teams with the six for six after 180 minutes of football, but didn’t impress for many stretches of the narrow win. Bournemouth are still at 0.
Manchester City 3 Chelsea 0: Big wins, even as big as this, don’t mean much this early in the season. But winning 3-0 against the champions while heading back to the top of the table is always nice. It began with Sergio Aguero in the first half, carried on to Vincent Kompany in the second half and the clincher from a fantastic Fernandinho, as Chelsea didn’t just lose, but got bullied the whole way through, and are with just one point out of the first six, while City are perfect with six goals and two clean sheets.
Crystal Palace 1 Arsenal 2: A much improved display from Arsene Wenger’s boys, as the return of Alexis Sanchez helped spark some life into the Arsenal offense. The lead came off of a spectacular overhead kick by Olivier Giroud, but the hosts equalized via Joel Ward, scoring a brilliant long range strike, once more showing Petr Cech is a bit off form. Arsenal dominated the second half, rewarded with a Palace own goal to win them the match.
Aston Villa 0 Manchester United 1: Few matches this season will be as boring and lifeless as this one, but Manchester United keep picking up points without getting anyone excited, this time through a deflected Adnan Januzaj shot in the first half.
Southampton 0 Everton 3: A poor performance for the home side, struggling to create chances against an Everton side with a much sturdier defense than in the first week to back up their counter attacks. Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the first half while Ross Barkley finished the job with six minutes to go.
Sunderland 1 Norwich 3: Sunderland are in big trouble and 0 points following the first two matches, while Norwich get their first of the season with an impressive away trip to the Northeast, with goals from Russell Martin, Steven Whittaker and Nathan Redmond, while Duncan Watmore pulled one back for the hosts late in the match.
Swansea 2 Newcastle 0: Swansea keep looking very good in August, and Newcastle losing Daryl Janmaat to a red card in the first half didn’t help. Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew both scored for a second consecutive week.
Tottenham 2 Stoke 2: Spurs will be left wondering once again how they dropped points, leading by two at the half through Eric Dier and Nacer Chadli, but going on the defensive in the second half cost them, conceding from a penalty by Marko Arnautovic and then the equalizer from Mame Diouf.
West Ham 1 Leicester 2: The fabulous start of the season continues from last year miracle survivors, getting goals from Shinji Okazaki and Riyad Mahrez, while West Ham got back in the match too late through Dimitri Payet.
