The opening weekend of the 2015 college football season opens with three ranked teams losing: Wisconsin to Alabama in the AdvoCare Classic (not a surprise) and two less predictable results; Northwestern stunning Stanford and Texas A&M crushing Arizona State. National championship and playoff hopefuls like TCU, Baylor, Michigan State, Auburn and Oregon looked impressive enough considering the stage of the season and their weak opponents for the most part.

#2 TCU 23  Minnesota 17: A rough game and a not so smooth performance, but enough for the Horned Frogs to win their opener, behind 246 passing yards, one touchdown thrown, 92 rushing yards and another rushing touchdown by Trevone Boykin.

#20 Wisconsin 17  #3 Alabama 35: The famous Wisconsin rushing game was stopped at just 40 yards by the Crimson Tide, while Jake Coker looked good with a touchdown pass and running back Derrick Henry rushed for three TDs and 147 yards.

#4 Baylor 56  SMU 22: Changing quarterbacks doesn’t matter in the season opener, as Seth Russell threw for five touchdown passes (and one interception) as the Bears outscored the Mustangs 28-0 in the second half.

#5 Michigan State 37  Western Michigan 24: Connor Cook threw a couple of touchdown passes and Madre London ran for a couple in an easy win for the Spartans, starting strong and easing up as the game went by.

Louisville 24  #6 Auburn 31: A weird game for Auburn, leading 31-10 entering the fourth quarter but almost letting that slip away. Quarterback Jeremy Johnson struggled, throwing one touchdown pass and three interceptions while the defense allowed three rushing touchdowns.

Eastern Washington 42  #7 Oregon 61: Vernon Adams threw for a couple of touchdowns and ran for 94 yards in an impressive debut. Royce Freeman ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns, while the defense gave up too many easy points from the second quarter onward.

Arkansas State 6  #8 USC 55: The coaching drama didn’t have any effect on the opening game for the Trojans. Cody Kessler threw four touchdown passes, holding the Red Wolves scoreless in three of the four quarters.

Louisiana Monroe 14  #9 Georgia 51: An easy start for the Bulldogs, getting four rushing touchdowns including a couple from Nick Chubb while Greyson Lambert threw for a couple. holding the Warhawks to just 250 yards of offense.

Texas State 16  #10 Florida State 59: The post-Jameis Winston era begins with an easy win, including Everett Golson throwing four touchdown passes and Dalvin Cook running for a couple.

Texas 3  #11 Notre Dame 38: Things look bad for Texas once again with just 163 yards of offense, while the Fighting Irish rolled on all fronts, including three touchdown passes by Malik Zaire.

Wofford 10  #12 Clemson 49: Deshaun Watson threw a couple of touchdown passes; Wayne Gallman and Tyshon Dye ran for two each. Wofford were held to just 223 yards on offense.

Virginia 16  #13 UCLA 34: New quarterback, familiar results, as the Bruins rolled over the Cavaliers with Josh Rosen throwing three touchdown passes and 351 passing yards.

#15 Arizona State 17  Texas A&M 38: The kind of result that fuels the whole “SEC rules” thing as the Sun Devils crash & burn on a big nonconference road game, despite a less than stellar performance from Kyle Allen and Kyler Murray. The Aggies ran away with the game in the final quarter, outscoring ASU 21-3. Christian Kirk scored one punt return touchdown and another off a screen pass.

Alcorn State 6  #16 Georgia Tech 69: The Yellow Jackets get an easy start to the season against an FCS team with 476 yards of rushing and nine touchdowns on the ground, including three by Patrick Skov and two for Marcus Marshall.

Tennessee-Martin 3  #17 Ole Miss 76: The Rebels had no problems against a vastly inferior opponents, getting 662 yards of total offense including two touchdown passes by Chad Kelly. Three quarterbacks got to play and Jaylen Washington ran for a couple of scores. Even defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche scored one.

UTEP 13  #18 Arkansas 48: Brandon Allen was extremely efficient with 14-of-18 for 308 yards and four passing touchdowns while Alex Collins ran for 127 yards and a score. UTEP were held to just 204 yards of total offense.

Akron 3  #19 Oklahoma 41: The Sooners aren’t used to starting this low in the rankings, but maybe Baker Mayfield can take care of that. He looked good with three touchdown passes and 388 yards in an easy win.

#21 Stanford 6  Northwestern 16: One of two upsets this weekend, with Northwestern holding the Cardinal to 0 touchdowns and only 240 yards on offense. Wildcats started the season on a winning note for the first time against a ranked team since 1995.

Texas San Antonio 32  #22 Arizona 42: Anu Solomon did have a good day in the pocket with four touchdown passes but the Wildcats do need to worry about their defense giving up so many points at home to the Roadrunners.

Washington 13  #23 Boise State 16: The Broncos get some revenge against their former head coach in a game of two halves, with Boise scoring 16 points in the first and nearly letting it slip away in the second half. Jeremy McNichols rushed for a couple of touchdowns, while no quarterback threw a touchdown pass.

Southeast Missouri State 3  #24 Missouri 34: Maty Mauk remains a problem for Missouri with just 181 passing yards, 54.5% completion and an interception, but the defense holding the Redhawks to less than 200 yards of offense made most of the difference.

Bowling Green 30  #25 Tennessee 59: Is this the season the Vols comeback? Their defense didn’t look up to the task, giving 30 points through the first three quarters. Joshua Dobbs threw a couple of touchdown passes and the team ran for 399 yards, including three touchdowns by Jalen Hurd and a couple from Alvin Kamara.
