    A terrible day for the Big 12 as we move into more prestigious bowl territory. West Virginia lost to Texas A&M in the Liberty Bowl while the big names (but not best teams of the conference) were humiliated – Oklahoma in the Russell Athletic Bowl against Clemson and Texas, finishing the season below .500, by Arkansas in the Texas Bowl.

    The Arizona State Sun Devils seemed to be going places this season before it all fell apart on two separate occasions. At least in the bowl game (Sun Bowl) things went their way, beating Duke 36-31 thanks to a solid performance from Taylor Kelly and a great one by Demario Richards.

    After years of success, (Frank) Beamer ball is on the decline, but it’s still worth something on big occasions, as Virginia Tech cruise to a 33-17 win over Cincinnati in the Military Bowl in the only way they know how: Interceptions, defensive touchdowns and dominating through special teams.

    After years of being on the verge of becoming part of the SEC’s elite and making it to a BCS bowl game, South Carolina took a huge step backwards this season. At least the disappointing year ended with something to smile about, beating Miami 24-21 in the Independence Bowl.

    Quarterback Christian Hackenberg broke some Penn State Bowl game records with his performance that led the Nittany Lions to a 31-30 overtime win over Boston College in the Pinstripe bowl, giving James Franklin the privilege of being the first head coach to lead them to postseason success in the post-Sandusky ban era, showing a lot of promise for years to come.

    A busy day with some high profile teams means we’re getting more and more serious. USC beat Nebraska in something of a home game in the Holiday Bowl; Penn State got their first bowl win under coach Franklin, beating Boston College in the Pinstripe bowl; South Carolina won the Independence bowl against Miami; Virginia Tech beat Cincinnati to claim the Military Bowl and in the Sun Bowl, Arizona State edged out Duke.

    Moving past Christmas means the teams from bigger conferences start getting involved. In three Boxing Day bowl games, Louisiana Tech (over Illinois in the Heart of Dallas Bowl), Rutgers (over North Carolina in the Quick Lane Bowl) and North Carolina State (over UCF in the St. Petersburg Bowl) came out as the winners.

Navy finished a very good season in the Poinsettia Bowl with a dramatic win against San Diego State while Marshall have an even better finish and year, dominating Northern Illinois in the first ever Boca Raton Bowl.
