According to all indications, after seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers, Greg Jennings is headed towards a future with a different team in 2013. A recent new contender for the wide receiver’s services, surprisingly, come from within the division, in the form of the Minnesota Vikings.
Jennings missed the early half of the season in 2012 due to a groin injury, eventually playing in 8 games, starting 5 of them. He finished with 36 receptions, 366 yards (10.2 per catch, career low) and four touchdown catches. He made the Pro Bowl twice in a row before his injury shortened 2012, although he was pretty productive at the end of it, including a 120 yard game against the Vikings to finish the regular season and combining for 10 catches, 115 yards and a touchdown in the two playoff games.
Up until recently, it’s been thought that the Miami Dolphins might be the first team in line to grab Jennings in free agency. Joe Philbin is the head coach, and he worked with the Packers from 2003 to 2011 in various roles, including being the offensive coordinator between 2007 and 2011.
However, the Vikings, who have been torched by Jennings in the past as we mentioned before, have about $16 million in cap space if everything goes according to plan. Their first issue for the off season? Get Christian Ponder more receiving targets. The Vikings were second to last when it came to passing yards this season with only 6.1 yards per passing attempt and a passer rating in the bottom 10 of the NFL. Not that Ponder was perfect, but a very limited receiving core, mostly basing on Percy Harvin and tight end Kyle Rudolph, was one of the reason’s the Vikings relied so much on the legs of Adrian Peterson.
Not wanting to put that kind of load on their MVP running back once again, the Vikings are looking to make things a little bit more varied on offense. Jennings, who has caught more touchdowns against the Vikings (10) during his career than any other NFL team, might be a very good choice to improve their passing ability on offense.
